Breeding budgies is one of the most rewarding hobbies. But it can be quite tricky. In this article, I will share my years of experience and tricks.

Let's start at the beginning PREPARATION.

Before breeding, Budgies need to have rested for at least 3 months. Make sure they have vitamin drops and plenty of cuttlebone and iodine. The longer their rest period, the better (healthier chicks, etc).

Budgies eat a varied diet (greens and carrot).

But the key to success is rest! Try to breed with the season.

Put nest boxes up in March and take them down in September. This ensures they have enough heat and light. And a nice long rest in-between. Make sure your Budgies have access to cuttlebone and iodine at all times. Check the box every day, If a chick dies it’s normally a sign of the following.

The breeding pair is too young/old. They are tired or bored. They have bad genes. The perfect age for a Budgie to breed is 1–2 years old. When you have a good pair that raise nice babies. Look after them! If a female starts attacking either dad or babies. Remove the female and let dad finish feeding them. But this only works for babies that are 2 weeks old. And dad will need a break after. The maximum number of clutches is 3 per year.

After the third round of babies, the birds must be rested. One trick some breeders recommend is placing a millet sprig in the box for older babies and mum to pick at. But in the long run, a breeder must patient, adaptable, and understanding. You will have amazing seasons… And bad ones L But always remember your bird's well-being should always be the priority.

Some tips for breeding in the aviary

Make sure all nest boxes go up at the same time. For every four pairs of budgies, put 6 nest boxes up.

Make sure the youngest female is over a year old. If a young female comes into breeding mid-season she could attack other currently breeding females. Any female looking into a settled females box must be removed.

If you do not take action the results can be devastating. Males will fight over females sometimes. If a bird is aggressive then maybe try them in a cage But with some hard work, patience and dedication. You too can help create lots of adorable Babies J. Never be afraid to seek advice from fellow breeders. If you keep some babies, make sure to breed with new stock from somewhere else J.

And share your pictures and experience with others.
